10 Ways to Lose Weight at the Office

By: Caley Walsh

If you are working a full-time job, you may think that you don't have time to exercise and eat healthy. But even in the office, you can fit in healthy habits. Here's how.

  1. Always take the stairs. If you need a bathroom break, go to a bathroom on a different floor. Every little bit helps.

  2. Take a 15 minute yoga-break mid-morning and mid-afternoon. Even if you have to adjust your work hours to work slightly earlier and/or later, these breaks will give you 30 minutes of light exercise every day. Such breaks will help revitalize your mind and relieve stress.

  3. If you can, stand when you are on the phone, bouncing weight between feet. Fidgeting is good for you!

  4. Keep useful items such as the stapler or paperclips up on the top shelf, so that you have to stand up and stretch to reach them. This will remind you to keep moving, even slightly.

  5. Pack your lunch. It’s tempting to pop out to a fast food place for lunch, so pack healthy items that you enjoy eating. Try whole grain tortillas rolled up with sliced vegetables and lean protein, such as turkey, chicken or black beans.

  6. Go for a walk around the building after lunch. Ask a co-worker to join in and chat as you make a few laps around the building.

  7. Make a health drawer. Place healthy snacks such as nuts, cereal, dried fruit and wheat crackers in the drawer to avoid sneaking off to the vending machine.

  8. Enjoy herbal or green tea throughout the day, instead of coffee or soda. With so many different varieties, you are bound to find one you enjoy. Green tea can help boost your metabolism.

  9. Drink plenty of water. When many people think they are hungry, they are actually thirsty. Keep a bottle or thermos on your desk.

  10. Learn to say no. If someone offers you a doughnut in the morning or a trip to a greasy burger join at lunch, just tell them no thank you. You have no responsibility to explain, but if they insist, just tell them you are watching what you eat. So many of us are these days!
