The Mediterranean Diet

By: Caley Walsh

You might have heard the rumor that the Mediterranean diet, rich in fish, fresh produce and olive oil, is the healthiest in the world. The Mediterranean diet gives you a weight loss plan to follow based on this idea.

What it is: The Mediterranean Diet is based on flavorful foods enjoyed in the Mediterranean for centuries, which in studies have been shown to reduce the likelihood of heart disease and encourage weight loss.

How it works: The Mediterranean Diet has its own version of the Food Pyramid to help practitioners balance daily meals. Food is broken down into foods that should be consumed daily, weekly and monthly only.

What you do: Practitioners eat fresh fruits and vegetables, legumes, fish, milk products, some chicken and even a little wine. Exercise is also an important part of the diet.

Benefits
: This diet allows you to enjoy a variety of foods, which may help encourage a healthy heart.

Downside
: This diet may be unsuitable with those with food allergies, especially shellfish. There is an expense of $5 to obtain the diet information at eDiets.com.
