Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup very warm water
  • 1 package yeast
  • 1/2 cup butter substitute, softened
  • 1/2 cup plus 2/3 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3 eggs, or equivalent egg substitute
  • 1/4 cup skim milk
  • 2 1/3 cups plus 1/2 cup white whole wheat or all-purpose flour, unsifted
  • 3 large apples
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 6 tablespoons butter substitute

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
     
  2. Measure the water into a small bowl. Sprinkle yeast on top. Stir until dissolved.
     
  3. Cream softened butter substitute thoroughly in a large electric mixing bowl. Gradually add 1/2 cup sugar and salt. Cream together.
     
  4. Add the yeast mixture, eggs and skim milk. Beat at medium speed until well blended.
     
  5. Gradually add and blend in 2 1/3 cup flour while beating at medium speed; beat until the mixture is well blended.
     
  6. Spread the batter in a well-greased 9x9" pan. Arrange Apple Crumb Topping over dough.
     
  7. Cover and let rise in a warm place, free from draft, until doubled in bulk, about 1 hour.
     
  8. Bake in 375 degrees F oven for about 35 to 40 minutes. Turn out of pan and cool on a wire rack.
     
  9. Apple Crumb Topping: Core, peel and slice the apples and arrange on the dough. Combine with 1/2 cup flour, cinnamon and 6 tablespoons butter substitute, and mix until crumbly. Sprinkle over apples.
