Charming Vintage Biscuits

Ingredients

  • 1 package yeast
  • 5 cups whole wheat pastry flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup all-natural sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup margarine
  • 2 cups skim milk, with 2 teaspoons of lemon juice mixed in

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F. Soften yeast in 2 tablespoons warm water.
     
  2. Sift together flour, baking powder, salt, sugar and baking soda. Blend in margarine (or butter, or your favorite solid butter substitute)  with a pastry blender or a fork.
     
  3. Add yeast and milk/lemon juice mixture to the dry ingredients to form soft dough. Knead labout 4 to 5 times.
     
  4. Roll the dough 1/2-inch thick and cut with biscuit or cookie cutter. Place on greased cookie sheet, and brush the tops with melted butter or margarine if desired.
     
  5. Bake at 400 degrees F for 12 to15 minutes, until the biscuits are finished cooking.
