What it is: Developed by Northwestern University medical professor Dr. Robert F. Kushner, the personality type diet asks readers to take a 66 question personality survey in order to assign them to a plan that works.

How it works: Dieters answer questions about their eating, exercise and coping habits and are then placed into one or more categories. Each section of the book is dedicated to a category and outlines specific advice for changing attitudes and behaviors.

What you do: Kushner encourages dieters to eat fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat foods. There is an emphasis on vegetarian meals, however, fish and poultry are allowed. Lean red meat is discouraged.

Benefits: Experts praise Kushner for a plan that makes sense and is easy to follow.

The Down Side: Because Kushner is not a clinical psychologist, experts recommend those with food issues seek one out to help with their diet and weight loss goals.
