What it is: Self-help guru Paul McKenna’s TLC show “I Can Make You Thin” is designed to help people overcome the mental hurdles that prevent them from losing weight and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

How it works: McKenna sticks to four golden rules of dieting:

1. When you’re hungry, eat!
2. Eat what you want (not what you think you should)
3. Eat consciously
4. When you think you’re full, stop eating.

McKenna attempts to attack people’s “inner demons” and steer them in a direction toward healthier living. He uses a variety of techniques, like encouraging dieters to picture unpleasant images when craving an unhealthy food or telling dieters to replace their negative inner voice with a silly one.

What you do: Because “I Can Make You Thin” is currently only on TV, dieters can pick up tips and ideas from the show, but cannot get real guidance or a formal diet plan on this program.

Benefits: McKenna addresses the emotional side of eating and dieting, which helps boost self-esteem and confidence. Dieters also get the benefit of watching others go through the process on television, which may help them relate to another dieter or specific plan.

The Down Side: There are no actual guidelines for what foods you should consume or how you should construct an exercise plan.
