What it is: Meant to be followed for 14 days, the Grapefruit Diet is a quick-fix crash diet that has been around for a few years. While there is no scientific research to back it, the Grapefruit Diet has been known to cause dramatic weight loss in a short period of time.

How it works: Don’t be confused by the magazine articles you may read, nutritionists agree that the weight loss attributed to this diet is not due to the magic power of the grapefruit but instead the suggested low-calorie consumption (around 800 calories). For this reason, many nutritionists warn that this diet can cause malnutrition and weakness and should not be followed for an extended period of time.

What you do: While on the Grapefruit Diet, a typical day of eating would include a breakfast of half a grapefruit, two slices of bacon and two eggs. For lunch, you’d have another grapefruit half with as much meat as you’d like and a salad with a dressing of your choice. For dinner, an average meal would consist of half a grapefruit, fish or another lean meat and a salad or a buttered red or green vegetable. Before bed, diets may permit themselves 8 ounces of skim milk.

Benefits: The Grapefruit Diet has seen many folks through a quick weight loss and the plan promotes heart health while reducing cholesterol. Also, since grapefruits are a great source of beta-carotene, you’ll be getting a healthy does while following the plan.

Downside: This diet has an extremely low in-take of calories and is not a long-term solution for weight loss. Once you stop following the Grapefruit Diet, the pounds will come back if you return to your regular eating habits with no exercise plan (the Grapefruit Diet does not provide any exercise suggestions). And if you aren’t a fan of grapefruits, this one is not for you.
